Today is World Patient Safety Day | 17 September

#WorldPatientSafetyDay

Today, the world comes together to mark World Patient Safety Day— a call for global solidarity and action to make health care safer for everyone.

This day brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety.

Why it matters

Safe care is a basic right. Unsafe care causes harm, loss of life, and mistrust in health systems. Improving patient safety protects patients and also supports the health workers who care for them.

World Patient Safety Day was established by the World Health Assembly through Resolution WHA 72.6 — _Global action on patient safety_ — which recognizes patient safety as a global health priority. Since then, 17 September has been observed every year as a reminder that patient safety is everyone’s responsibility.

What we can do today

- For health workers: Practice safe care, communicate clearly, listen to patients and families.

- For patients and families: Speak up, ask questions, share your history, and be involved in decisions about your care.

- For health facilities and leaders: Build safer systems, encourage reporting without blame, and train staff on safety.

- For all of us: Show support, share information, and promote a culture where safety comes first.

Today, let’s commit to safer care — because no one should be harmed while seeking health care.
